Fed up of walking on broken glass I moved again. I found another abandoned flat and, with Jerry and his collection of videos and boxing magazines safely beside me, broke inside. The flat was part of the same estate from which we had just been evicted; inside, it was an almost carbon-copy of the one that we had recently wrecked. We decided we’d be more careful with the furniture in future. There was, however, one fundamental difference between the flat that we had just left and its undamaged replacement. It had nothing to do with the fact that the carpet was not covered with smashed crockery and shards of splintered wood; nor did it have anything to do with the fact that the front door was still on its hinges and that the toilet bowl was not in several pieces. This flat came with a typewriter: a great big rusty old thing that the previous occupant had left behind. I started tinkering with it and wondered vaguely how much it was worth.
